In the early hours of New Year's Day 2022, the life of Breon Tre'Vaunt Gates, a 27-year-old Black / African American man from Zion, Illinois, was tragically cut short. The scene was the parking lot of Coins Sports Bar in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where a celebration turned into a scene of chaos and violence. Just before 4 a.m., gunfire erupted, sending people running and vehicles fleeing from the area.
When police arrived, they discovered a grim tableau: four individuals had been shot.
Among the victims was Breon Gates, who was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts. Three others, two men aged 23 and 27, and a 24-year-old woman, all also believed to be from Illinois, were injured in the shooting. They were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to critical. In the days that followed, the conditions of the two hospitalized victims were reported to have improved.
Kenosha police officials stated that they did not believe the shooting was a random act of violence, suggesting that the victims may have been targeted. However, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation into the death of Breon Gates and the wounding of three others remains ongoing.
Breon, known affectionately as "Lucky" to his friends and family, was remembered as a man full of joy with a passion for baking, especially for his mother, father, and sisters. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Sevyn, and was eagerly awaiting the birth of his son, Breon Jr., the following month. His sudden death left a void in the lives of his loved ones, who described him as a big jokester who cherished his family and was always surrounded by music. The community was left to grapple with the violent start to the new year as authorities continued their search for those responsible.
