In a quiet Milwaukee neighborhood, the life of a vivacious and curious 7-year-old White male named Kevin James "KJ" Wilhelm was tragically cut short on December 8, 2021. The young boy, known for his love of Legos, comics, and endless questions, was found deceased inside his home in what was determined to be a horrific murder-suicide. The devastating event claimed the lives of three other people, including his devoted father.
Officers had been dispatched to the duplex on the city's south
side near 49th and Oklahoma for a welfare check. Upon entering the residence, they discovered the four deceased individuals, all having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The victims from the upstairs unit were identified as KJ and his 42-year-old father, Jason Wilhelm. In the downstairs unit, 54-year-old Jeazell Woodruff and 49-year-old Fredrick Holmes were found.
Investigations revealed a grim sequence of events. Authorities identified Fredrick Holmes, who lived with Woodruff, as the suspected shooter. It is believed that Holmes shot and killed KJ, his father Jason, and Woodruff before turning the gun on himself. Jason Wilhelm was found to have died heroically, reportedly while trying to protect his son and his neighbor from the assailant. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office subsequently ruled the deaths of Kevin, Jason, and Jeazell as homicides, while Holmes' death was ruled a suicide.
The shocking incident left the community and family reeling from the sudden loss. Described as inseparable, KJ and his single father shared a deep bond. Jason was a gentle and compassionate man who dedicated his life to his son. KJ, a bright light to all who knew him, was a second-grader who, along with his father, enjoyed exploring Milwaukee's museums. As there was no surviving suspect, the case concluded with no arrests being made.
