On the evening of September 30, 2023, a shooting incident in Milwaukee claimed the life of 50-year-old Gregory Redmond, a Black/African American male. The altercation occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of 45th and Center. Redmond sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including to his head and chest, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 17-year-old Tristan Cross.
Authorities identified Cross as Redmond's former foster child. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing the suspect raise a gun and shoot Redmond. These witnesses later identified Cross in a photo lineup. Following his arrest at a West Milwaukee residence, Cross was charged as an adult with first-degree reckless homicide and bail jumping. At the time of the incident, he was out on bond for a previous armed robbery charge from August 2022.
During police questioning, Cross initially denied being in the area of the shooting. He later changed his statement, claiming that Redmond had approached him with a gun, and he shot him in self-defense. Investigators did find a gun tucked into Redmond's waistband. A court commissioner set Cross's bond at $100,000.
