In a quiet Milwaukee neighborhood, the stillness of a winter Sunday was shattered by a grim discovery that would soon unfold into a story of immense loss. On January 23, 2022, police were called to a duplex on the city's north side, where a scene of tragedy awaited them. Inside, they found the bodies of six individuals, among them a 42-year-old Black / African American man named Charles Hardy.
He, along with five others, had been shot to death in what appeared to be a brutal act of violence that left the community in shock.
The investigation into the mass killing painted a harrowing picture of what had transpired. It is believed the victims were actually killed three days prior to being found. The others who lost their lives alongside Charles Hardy were identified as Michelle Williams, 49; Donta Williams, 44; Donald Smith, 43; Javoni Liddell, 31; and Caleb Jordan, 23. The crime scene was chaotic, with signs of a violent encounter. Law enforcement recovered numerous fired cartridge casings, suggesting that more than one firearm was used in the commission of the crime. Three of the victims, including Hardy, were discovered in the basement of the residence.
As investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the six deaths, a suspect emerged. Travis Lamar Birkley, a 34-year-old man, was arrested and charged with six counts of felony murder. The evidence against him was compelling, including cellphone data that placed him at the scene of the crime. A particularly damning piece of evidence was a selfie Birkley had allegedly taken in the basement of the home where the bodies were found. In the photo, he was reportedly wearing the glasses of one of the victims.
The motive for this tragic event appears to have been a drug robbery that went horribly wrong. According to information gathered by investigators, Birkley allegedly admitted to a witness that he and his cousin had planned to rob one of the victims. This planned robbery escalated into the killing of all six individuals present in the home. While Birkley has been charged in connection with the deaths, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for the six lives that were tragically cut short.
