In the early morning hours of Sunday, September 18, 2022, the life of 17-year-old Prestin Gill-Pate, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short by gunfire in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The shooting occurred just after midnight near the intersection of 71st Street and Hampton Avenue. Prestin was a senior at Madison High School and was on the cusp of starting his first job at Footlocker, a future filled with promise that was violently extinguished.
The sound of gunshots pierced the
night, and tragically, it was Prestin's own grandmother, Lennise Vickers, who heard them. Rushing outside, she found her grandson suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. In his final moments, she held him in her arms as he struggled to breathe, repeatedly saying, "I can't breathe." Emergency services were called, but Prestin succumbed to his injuries at the scene, leaving his family and community in a state of profound shock and grief. The family later held a vigil and a balloon release to honor his memory.
The Milwaukee Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, seeking to understand the circumstances that led to the shooting and to identify those responsible. Despite their efforts and pleas from Prestin's family for justice, the investigation has not yet led to any arrests. The police have continued to search for suspects and have urged anyone with information to come forward. The absence of closure has left Prestin's loved ones in a prolonged state of mourning, waiting for the day when those who took his life are held accountable for their actions.
