In the early hours of April 24, 2015, a violent encounter in Yakima, Washington, claimed the life of 38-year-old Jesse Marquez, a Hispanic male. The incident occurred at approximately 1:02 a.m. in front of a residence at 511 South Naches Avenue. Marquez was shot a single time in the abdomen, the bullet from what was possibly a 9mm handgun tearing through his body and exiting his back.
The gunshot struck the iliac artery, causing substantial and rapid blood loss.
First responders rushed Marquez to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery. Despite the efforts of the medical team, the massive loss of blood had already taken a severe toll. Marquez survived the initial surgery but remained in critical condition. His body could not overcome the trauma and the severe pulmonary and cerebral edema that developed. In the quiet of the hospital, at 2:04 a.m. on April 25, 2015, Jesse Marquez succumbed to his injuries.
The Yakima County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on April 28, 2015. The forensic pathologist determined the official cause of death to be hypovolemic shock due to exsanguination from the gunshot wound to the abdomen. His death was officially classified as an unjustifiable homicide, the second in the city of Yakima for that year. The Yakima Police Department undertook the investigation into the shooting.
