In the spring of 2016, a young Hispanic man's life was cut short in a fatal shooting in Yakima, Washington. Luis Ramirez-Gonzalez, a 24-year-old male, was killed on April 8, 2016. The incident that led to his death unfolded in the parking lot of a local business. This act of violence was noted as one of three fatal shootings to occur in the Yakima Valley over that same weekend.
The investigation into the death of Ramirez-Gonzalez led to the arrest of a suspect.
Ivan Venegas-Madrid of Union Gap was accused of the killing. Another individual, a 26-year-old woman named Amber Marquez, was also implicated. Prosecutors stated that Marquez drove Venegas-Madrid to and from the scene of the shooting.
In August 2018, Ivan Venegas-Madrid, then 25, was sentenced for his role in the death of Luis Manuel Ramirez-Gonzalez. He received a 17-year prison sentence after entering an Alford plea to a charge of second-degree murder in Yakima County Superior Court. An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors have enough evidence to likely secure a conviction. Amber Marquez also entered an Alford plea to a charge of first-degree rendering criminal assistance and was sentenced to a year in jail for her involvement.
