In the late afternoon of August 23, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at the intersection of North 18th Avenue and Willow Street in Yakima, Washington. When the sound faded, 30-year-old Tolerance Rushing Waters Jackson lay dead from a gunshot wound. The male victim had been walking north when the incident occurred. First responders arrived at the scene around 3:55 p.m. to find Jackson grievously wounded.
Despite their immediate efforts to render aid, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Initially, the Yakima Police Department stated that there was no indication the shooting was gang-related and the motive was unknown. Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene but were later released after it was determined they were not involved in the homicide. For a time, the case remained without a suspect, prompting police to ask the community for any surveillance footage that might offer clues.
A significant development in the investigation came in early September when a 32-year-old man was arrested at a Yakima residence in connection with Jackson's death. He was subsequently charged with Second-Degree Murder and booked into the Yakima County Jail. Further details emerged that the suspect was a 33-year-old man with alleged ties to a Norteño street gang and that the shooting was being investigated as a drive-by killing. At the time of his arrest for Jackson's murder, the suspect was already on pretrial release for a hit-and-run incident that had occurred in June. The Yakima County Coroner officially ruled Tolerance Jackson's death a homicide as the investigation continues.
