In the spring of 2017, the life of a young Hispanic woman was tragically cut short in Yakima, Washington. Sofia China Ramirez, an 18-year-old female, had recently returned to her hometown to be closer to her large, close-knit family after spending the previous year living with an older sister in Wasco, California. Born and raised in Yakima County, Sofia was the seventh of eleven children and was known for her loving personality and readiness to help others.
She found joy in simple pleasures like listening to music, playing video games, and gathering for family barbecues.
On the night before May 7, 2017, Sofia attended a party. Reports from the initial investigation indicated that while at the gathering, she was intoxicated and began playing with a handgun. The situation took a devastating turn when the firearm accidentally discharged, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound to her head. In the ensuing panic, other party-goers moved Sofia from the location of the party and placed her in a parked car at the intersection of 3rd Street and Arlington Avenue, where she was later discovered.
Initially, the coroner's office determined her death to be a tragic accident, not a homicide. For a time, it seemed that no charges would be filed in connection with the incident, with law enforcement citing a need to focus limited resources on a number of unsolved homicides in the city. However, the story did not end there. In late 2018, the Yakima Police Department decided to reopen the investigation into Sofia's death, prompted by the emergence of new evidence that shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the event.
This renewed investigation led to a significant development. The firearm involved in the accidental shooting was identified as one that had been stolen from a Bi-Mart store a few months earlier. Investigators were able to connect the stolen gun to a man named David Gonzales. DNA evidence confirmed his link to the weapon, and he was subsequently arrested. Gonzales faced charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm. While the individuals at the party who moved her were cooperative with the investigation, no charges were brought against them. The focus of the legal action remained on the illegal possession of the weapon that led to the devastating and untimely death of Sofia Ramirez.
