In the summer of 2015, a domestic argument in a Hazel Dell home in Vancouver, Washington, escalated into a horrific act of violence that left three people dead. On the afternoon of July 14, 40-year-old Elizabeth Orozco was shot and killed by her husband, 42-year-old Robert Diaz Gutierrez. The tragedy unfolded in their shared residence at 2614 N.E. 98th St.
Also present in the home was Elizabeth's mother, 66-year-old Adela Ruiz-Gonzales, who was visiting from her home in Uruapan, Mexico.
In his rage, Gutierrez also fatally shot his mother-in-law. After killing the two women, Gutierrez then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life in a final, devastating act.
Tragically, three of the couple's four children, ranging in age from 11 to 19, were home at the time and witnessed the brutal events. One of the children made the harrowing 911 call to report the shootings. The children were unharmed and were safely escorted from the home by responding deputies. Authorities later confirmed there was no history of domestic violence reported at the house and that Gutierrez had no criminal record in Clark County. The Clark County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident as a double-homicide and suicide and assured the public that there was no ongoing danger to the community as they were not seeking any additional suspects.
