Matthew Cooper, a 29-year-old man from Cleveland, Ohio, was found fatally shot in the Tremont neighborhood on January 12, 2025. Authorities later determined that the shooting had actually occurred on West 81st Street before Cooper was discovered at a different location. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and transported Cooper to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following an investigation, police arrested 43-year-old Richard Marshall in connection with the
shooting. A Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted Marshall on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of having weapons under disability, one count of gross abuse of a corpse, and one count of tampering with evidence. Several of these charges included firearm specifications, and Marshall was also classified as a "repeat violent offender" due to a prior conviction for felonious assault in 2008.
Marshall was scheduled to be arraigned in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on January 24, 2025. In addition to the charges related to Cooper's death, Marshall was facing separate charges for drug trafficking and possession stemming from an indictment in October 2024. A pretrial hearing for that case was set for January 28, 2025. Authorities continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Cooper’s death, seeking further details about the events leading up to the fatal shooting.
