On a tragic Monday morning, June 9, 2014, the life of 49-year-old Sandra Luster, a female resident of Vancouver, Washington, was brought to a violent end in her own home. The events unfolded at approximately 5:20 a.m. in the North Image neighborhood, when neighbors were startled by the sounds of gunshots and screaming emanating from the Luster residence and promptly alerted the authorities.
Upon their arrival, Vancouver police officers entered the home to a horrific scene.
They discovered Sandra's husband, Danny Lee Luster, in the living room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. In a bedroom, they found Sandra Luster and the family dog, both of whom had been fatally shot. The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that Sandra's death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head, while Danny's death was ruled a suicide.
The couple's 23-year-old son, Matthew, was also a victim of the rampage. He was found in another bedroom, critically injured from a close-range gunshot wound to the abdomen. He had reportedly been shot while attempting to intervene and stop his father's violent actions. Matthew was rushed to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for emergency medical treatment.
The investigation into the tragic incident revealed a history of mental health struggles. According to court documents, Danny Luster had been showing signs of severe depression, and his family was in the process of seeking professional help for him. A search of the home uncovered several firearms, including the SKS rifle believed to have been used in the shootings, as well as a prescription for an anti-anxiety medication in Danny's name. As the perpetrator took his own life, no arrests were made in connection with Sandra Luster's murder, and the case was classified as a murder-suicide.
