In March of 2023, the life of 27-year-old Meshay Melendez, a female resident of Vancouver, Washington, was tragically cut short. Melendez and her 7-year-old daughter were last seen alive in the early morning hours of March 12, 2023. They were with her ex-boyfriend, Kirkland C. Warren. Concerns for their welfare arose when family members were unable to contact Melendez for their customary video chat session.
On March 18, after a week of no contact, her mother reported them missing, prompting a welfare check at Melendez's apartment by Vancouver police. Officers found the apartment empty, with the exception of her dog.
The investigation quickly centered on Warren, who had a history of domestic violence allegations involving Melendez and was under a no-contact order at the time of her disappearance. An acquaintance of Melendez told investigators that on the morning of March 12, she saw Melendez in Warren's car, seemingly unconscious. The acquaintance stated that Warren came to her home to pick up Melendez's daughter, who she had been watching. After putting the child in the vehicle, Warren drove away. This was the last time Melendez and her daughter were seen alive.
On March 22, the search for the missing mother and daughter came to a devastating end when a passerby discovered two bodies in a rural area near Washougal. The bodies were found down an embankment in thick brush and were initially mistaken for mannequins. Authorities later confirmed the remains were those of Meshay Melendez and her daughter. The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office determined that both had died from gunshot wounds to the head, ruling their deaths as homicides. Melendez had sustained a single gunshot wound, while her daughter had been shot twice.
Kirkland C. Warren was identified as a person of interest early in the investigation and was arrested on March 19 on unrelated charges, including tampering with a witness and violation of a no-contact order pertaining to Melendez. During a search of his vehicle, investigators found blood evidence and a. 22 caliber pistol. On March 31, 2023, Warren was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Melendez and her daughter. In September 2024, just days before his trial was set to begin, Warren pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Melendez and aggravated first-degree murder in the death of her daughter. He also entered an Alford plea to a charge of first-degree child molestation. Following his plea, Kirkland Warren was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
