In the early hours of January 6, 2018, a night out in Seattle's White Center neighborhood turned tragic for 51-year-old Jose Garcia. An altercation in the parking lot of the Taradise Cafe escalated, resulting in a shooting that would claim two lives. Garcia was fatally wounded at the scene, while a second man, 45-year-old Paul Tapia, was critically injured and later died at a local hospital.
The King County Sheriff's Office quickly launched an investigation into the double homicide.
Their efforts led them to identify 26-year-old Merle Charles Buchanan, also known by the nickname "Chucky," as the primary suspect in the shootings. A warrant was issued for his arrest on two counts of murder. Authorities described Buchanan as armed and dangerous and believed he was frequenting the Burien, Renton, and Seattle areas.
After a search, Merle Buchanan surrendered to police in early March 2018. Friends and coworkers of the victims were left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of Garcia and Tapia, as the legal process against the alleged shooter began.
