In the early morning hours of January 31, 2019, the life of 32-year-old Dustin M. Wilson, a White male from Bellingham, Washington, was tragically cut short in a burst of violence. The incident unfolded in the Alderwood neighborhood, at a residence on Old Marine Drive, where Wilson was ambushed and fatally shot. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with the fatal shot being to his head.
A 21-year-old woman who was with Wilson at the time was also shot once but survived her injuries.
The investigation swiftly pointed to a suspect: 31-year-old Cody Mitchell Brock. Surveillance footage from the scene was pivotal, showing Brock lying in wait for Wilson. The video captured the chilling moments as Brock emerged from hiding and attacked Wilson from behind as he and two women approached the house. The motive for this violent act appeared to stem from a long-standing dispute between Brock and Wilson concerning a woman who was present during the shooting. This conflict had escalated to the point where Brock had previously threatened to kill Wilson.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for Brock was initiated by the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office. With assistance from the U.S. Marshal's Violent Offender Task Force and the FBI, Brock was located and apprehended without incident at a hotel in Kent, Washington, on February 6, 2019. He was then transported back to Whatcom County and booked into jail on a charge of first-degree murder.
Cody Mitchell Brock ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and third-degree assault. In court, it was revealed that he and Wilson had been friends since childhood. Brock expressed remorse for his actions, stating it was the biggest mistake of his life. In June 2019, he was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of Dustin M. Wilson.
