In the quiet community of Nordland, Washington, a late summer evening barbecue took a tragic turn, ending the life of 24-year-old James McDonald. On August 26, 2020, McDonald was enjoying a gathering with friends on Marrowstone Island. Also present was 59-year-old John Paul Beckmeyer and his girlfriend, Danielle Boucher. The group was drinking and barbecuing outside a fifth-wheel trailer where Beckmeyer resided.
An argument reportedly began when Beckmeyer complained about the volume of the radio and asked Boucher to turn it down. When she did not comply, he struck her in the face. McDonald and another woman, Randi Benson, intervened, telling Beckmeyer not to hit a woman. This confrontation escalated, with an angered Beckmeyer threatening to get his gun before walking into his trailer. Moments later, Beckmeyer fired multiple shots from inside his trailer. McDonald, who was standing outside, was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene.
Law enforcement arrived to find James McDonald unresponsive on the ground with at least one gunshot wound. Beckmeyer was found inside his trailer with a firearm and was taken into custody. He was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. The investigation that followed led to a trial where John Paul Beckmeyer was convicted of second-degree murder for the death of James McDonald. He was also found guilty of lesser assault charges related to the events of that evening. Following his conviction, Beckmeyer was sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his actions.
