In the early morning hours of March 21, 2021, a violent encounter on a street in Everett, Washington, claimed the life of 40-year-old Wyatt Powell, a White male. The incident, which began as a vehicular pursuit, escalated tragically, leaving a community shaken and a family grieving. Powell was behind the wheel of his Toyota Camry when another vehicle, a Chevrolet Suburban, intentionally rammed his car, causing it to spin out of control in the 1000 block of Pecks Drive.
What followed was a burst of gunfire that would prove fatal.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing gunshots and seeing them fired from a pickup truck. Multiple shell casings were later recovered from the roadway by investigators. Powell, suffering from a gunshot wound, was rushed to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries three days later, on March 24, 2021. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office subsequently ruled his death a homicide, with the cause of death being a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
The investigation into Powell's death led authorities to identify Jesse Hartman as the primary suspect. The motive for the killing appeared to stem from a dispute that had occurred months prior, in December 2020. The conflict began when Hartman's girlfriend, Miranda Jones, gave Powell a ride to a casino. An argument ensued after Powell was denied entry for forgetting his identification, during which he reportedly directed a slur at Jones. This incident angered Hartman, leading to a later confrontation in a parking garage where Powell allegedly assaulted Hartman with a pistol after Hartman tripped while confronting him.
On the morning of the fatal shooting, events escalated when Powell reportedly rammed his Camry into Jones' vehicle. In response, Hartman pursued Powell in his Suburban, ultimately ramming his car and then firing multiple shots into Powell's vehicle. Following the shooting, Hartman fled, managing to make his way to Mexico in an attempt to evade capture. His efforts were ultimately futile, as he was later apprehended at the Mexican border. In November, Hartman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. For his crime, he was sentenced to approximately 22 years in prison. Miranda Jones also faced legal consequences for her role in the events, receiving a sentence for rendering criminal assistance.
