In the winter of 2022, a friendly gathering in an Everett, Washington apartment took a tragic and fatal turn, ending the life of 32-year-old Shane Michael Bryant. On the morning of February 1st, Shane was at a friend's apartment on Evergreen Way, spending time with his girlfriend of twelve years and another friend, Stefan Deremer.
What began as a casual morning of drinking took a dark turn when an argument erupted between Shane and Deremer.
While the dispute was not initially physical, Deremer suddenly produced a semiautomatic handgun and shot Shane in the face. The bullet passed through Shane's head and lodged in a nearby television. In the immediate aftermath, a shocked Deremer expressed remorse, claiming he was unaware the gun was loaded and pleaded with Shane's girlfriend not to contact the authorities.
Ignoring his pleas, Shane's distraught girlfriend, covered in blood, fled the apartment and called for help. First responders arrived to a grim scene, finding Deremer cradling his wounded friend. Shane was rushed to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett before being transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle due to the severity of his injuries. Despite surgical intervention to address the brain damage, his wounds proved to be non-survivable. Shane Michael Bryant succumbed to his injuries four days later, on February 5, 2022.
The man who fired the fatal shot, 32-year-old Stefan Deremer, was arrested at the scene. Initially charged with second-degree murder, he later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. In August 2022, a judge sentenced Deremer to over 14 years in prison for the death of his friend.
