In a tragic turn of events on June 20, 2022, a White / Caucasian male named Anthony Burnett, 48, was fatally shot in a residence on Lexington Avenue in Everett, Washington. This incident was part of a violent two-day spree that shook the local community. The previous day, the gunman had shot and paralyzed another man. On the day of Burnett's death, the assailant entered the home and opened fire, killing Burnett and another individual, Anthony Jolly.
A third person in the residence, Trent Wood, was also shot but survived the attack. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of Anthony Burnett's death was a gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death as a homicide.
The investigation swiftly led authorities to a single suspect, Shayne Baker. Eyewitness testimony, including from the surviving victim who identified the shooter by his first name, and surveillance footage from neighboring residences played a crucial role in linking Baker to the violent crimes. The surveillance videos confirmed that the same suspect vehicle was involved in both the shooting on Lexington Avenue and the one that occurred the previous day. Law enforcement located and arrested Baker on June 21, 2022. A search of the stolen vehicle he was driving at the time of his arrest revealed a stolen Glock handgun.
Shayne Baker was charged with a litany of serious offenses, including two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Anthony Burnett and Anthony Jolly, and multiple counts of first-degree assault for the other victims. Despite having no prior felony history, Baker was tried and, in May 2023, a jury found him guilty on all charges. The motive for the shootings remained unclear throughout the court proceedings. The trial featured emotional testimony from the victims' families, who spoke of the profound loss and devastation caused by Baker's actions. Ultimately, Shayne Baker was sentenced to 93 years in prison for his crimes.
