In a dramatic and tragic turn of events, Deputy Sheriff William C. Brown of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, a dedicated male officer, lost his life in the line of duty. The incident that led to his untimely demise began a day prior when a man in the community threatened his neighbor with a shotgun. This initial act of aggression prompted the town marshal of Lewisport, accompanied by a posse of six men, to visit the suspect's home to address the complaint.
Upon their arrival, the situation escalated rapidly as the suspect opened fire on the group with his shotgun, wounding all of them. Following the assault, the gunman barricaded himself inside his residence, initiating a tense standoff with law enforcement and concerned citizens who had gathered around the property. The armed man remained defiant throughout the day and into the night, intermittently firing at those who had surrounded his home, creating a volatile and dangerous scene.
The following morning, Deputy Brown arrived at the location to provide assistance. After assessing the prolonged and hazardous standoff, a decision was made to try and force the suspect out of the house by setting it on fire.
