In the quiet town of Princeton, Kentucky, the evening of July 30, 2022, was shattered by violence that ended the life of 42-year-old Gregory Cain, a Black male. The incident unfolded at a residence on Mechanic Street, where an altercation led to Cain suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Responding to reports of shots fired around 9:45 p.m., Princeton police officers discovered Cain on the front porch of the home. He was quickly transported to Caldwell Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced dead.
The events following the shooting moved swiftly. Approximately 30 minutes after the incident, 18-year-old Ashton Logan Ocampo walked into the local post office and informed dispatchers that he wanted to turn himself in. Ocampo was taken into custody and brought to the Princeton Police Department for questioning. During the interview, he allegedly confessed to shooting Cain.
As a result of the investigation and his confession, Ashton Logan Ocampo was arrested and charged with murder. He was also charged with theft by unlawful taking of a firearm. Ocampo was subsequently lodged in the Caldwell County Jail. In April 2024, the legal proceedings came to a conclusion when Ocampo pleaded guilty to amended charges of second-degree manslaughter and theft by unlawful taking of a firearm. He was then sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in the death of Gregory Cain.
