In the summer of 1980, on June 30th, a 29-year-old White/Caucasian male named Hiram A. Ritchie, a deputy sheriff from Hazard, Kentucky, met a tragic and untimely end. His death unfolded near Buckhorn Lake while he was in the line of duty, serving papers for the Perry County Sheriff's Department. Deputy Ritchie, along with another deputy, had stopped to investigate a group of four brothers who were sitting on a bridge railing.
The situation escalated rapidly when the deputies attempted to arrest one of the individuals. A gunfight suddenly erupted, involving the four brothers and their father who had arrived at the scene. In the exchange of gunfire, Deputy Ritchie was fatally wounded and died instantly. His fellow deputy sustained a serious gunshot wound to the abdomen but ultimately survived the encounter. One of the suspects was also shot in the leg during the violent altercation.
In the aftermath of the deadly shootout, all five of the men involved were apprehended and subsequently charged with murder. The legal proceedings that followed resulted in varied outcomes for the suspects. One of the brothers was convicted of manslaughter and received a 15-year prison sentence. Two other brothers were convicted on the lesser charge of reckless homicide and were sentenced to two and four years in prison, respectively. The father of the brothers, who admitted to shooting the other deputy but claimed it was an act of self-defense, was acquitted of the charges brought against him.
