Patrolman John Thomas of the New Orleans Police Department was shot and killed on March 10, 1901, while attempting to break up a fight at a dance hall located at the intersection of Lizardi and Rampart Streets. Thomas, who was in his early 30s, was survived by his wife and daughter.
