In the late summer of 1985, a dedicated and highly commended police officer, Roy Hobson Mardis, a 35-year-old male, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. A 13-year veteran of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Police Department, Mardis was renowned for his skill as a K-9 handler and had been named Officer of the Year in 1985.
