In the late summer of 2022, the life of 29-year-old Dietrich Lavell Murray was tragically cut short in Lexington, Kentucky. On the morning of August 31st, police responded to a report of a shooting and discovered Murray lying in the road at the intersection of North Broadway and Loudon Avenue with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The incident marked the city's 32nd homicide of the year.
The investigation into Murray's death led authorities to identify 45-year-old James Catlett as a suspect. A crucial piece of evidence in the case was a single spent. 380 caliber shell casing found at the scene of the shooting. Investigators were able to connect this casing to a handgun that was in Catlett's possession during a traffic stop that occurred on September 1st, just a day after the fatal shooting. It was not immediately clear if Catlett was already a suspect at the time of this traffic stop.
Further strengthening the case against him, an eyewitness positively identified James Catlett as the shooter from a photo lineup. Based on this evidence, the Lexington Police Department arrested Catlett on September 24, 2022, and charged him with the murder of Dietrich Murray. Following his arrest, Catlett was held at the Fayette County Detention Center to await court proceedings.
