In the winter of 1986, a young man's life was cut short in an act of senseless violence in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Michael R. Green, a 26-year-old male, was working as a uniformed off-duty security officer at a local nightclub on the evening of Sunday, January 26th. That night, he assisted other officers in removing several disorderly individuals from the establishment.
This routine act of maintaining order would tragically lead to his untimely death.
Later that same evening, the ejected individuals returned to the nightclub with retribution in mind. They opened fire into the club, and in the ensuing chaos, Michael R. Green was struck by the gunfire. The injuries he sustained proved to be fatal, and his watch as a corrections officer came to a permanent end. The cause of his death was determined to be intentional gunfire. A Marine veteran, Green was remembered as being full of life and truly enjoying his job at the Jefferson County Department of Corrections.
The investigation into the shooting led to the apprehension of two suspects. Following their arrests, both individuals were convicted of the murder of Corrections Officer Michael R. Green. The court sentenced both of the convicted murderers to life in prison for their roles in the fatal shooting that claimed the life of the young officer.
