On a summer evening in Louisville, Kentucky, a dispute over a can of beer escalated into a fatal tragedy. David Keith Dickson, a 36-year-old man, was shot and killed on June 12, 2022, at a Thornton's gas station situated at the corner of South 1st Street and West Broadway. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when Dickson was confronted by a security guard who accused him of shoplifting.
The security guard, Tavon Parrish, then 31, told police that he approached Dickson about the alleged
theft. An argument ensued, and Parrish stated that he shot Dickson because he believed the man intended to fight him. Dickson died from his injuries at the scene. Following the incident, it was discovered that Parrish, due to a prior plea agreement on a separate charge, was legally prohibited from carrying a firearm.
Parrish was arrested and charged with murder, to which he initially pleaded not guilty. The case against him changed significantly with the discovery of a cell phone video recorded by a bystander. While the gas station's silent security footage showed Dickson with his hands raised, the new video included audio in which Dickson could be heard threatening Parrish. This evidence provided the defense with a potential self-defense argument.
This new evidence led to a plea agreement. Parrish pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree manslaughter. Consequently, he was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison and will not be eligible for probation. In the wake of the criminal proceedings, David Dickson's family initiated a civil lawsuit against Thorntons and the security firm that employed Parrish, alleging negligence. The lawsuit contended that the companies knew or should have known that Parrish was not licensed as a security guard and was unfit to carry a weapon.
