In the summer of 2020, a life was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. Jose D. Hernandez, a 38-year-old Hispanic/Latino man, died on July 4th from a gunshot wound sustained during a dispute in the Newburg neighborhood. Though he had spent a significant portion of his life in Chicago, he had more recently made Louisville his home. Remembered by loved ones as a hardworking father, grandfather, and the life of the party, his sudden death left a void in the lives of his family and
friends.
The night of the incident, Louisville Metro Police responded to a call around 11:50 p.m. on Alba Way, where they discovered two men had been shot. Both Hernandez and another individual, 28-year-old Tyrin Currington, were transported to University Hospital. Hernandez was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Currington was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The altercation that led to the shooting reportedly began as a verbal argument between the two men.
The argument escalated when Currington allegedly drew a gun and pointed it at Hernandez's head. A struggle for the weapon ensued, during which Currington reportedly gained control of the firearm and shot Hernandez. In the moments that followed, Hernandez is said to have pulled out his own gun and shot Currington in the shoulder and side.
Following the investigation into the fatal shooting, Tyrin Currington was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Jose D. Hernandez's death. The charges were announced early the following morning, bringing a swift, though somber, development to the tragic event.
