On a cold December night in 1988, Kentucky State Trooper Johnny Montague Edrington, a 34-year-old male, was on duty in Laurel County. He was a respected officer, known for his dedication and bravery, having previously received a meritorious service award for stopping an armed fugitive. This night, however, would be his last. During a traffic stop on KY 80, just seven miles west of London, Trooper Edrington was fatally shot. His body was later found in a ditch near his patrol car.
