On May 20, 2014, a violent altercation took place in the Russell neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, claiming the lives of two men. Dwight Dion Patterson Jr., a 26-year-old Black male who worked in home improvement and construction, became involved in a dispute at the Beecher Terrace housing complex near 12th and Cedar Court. The confrontation occurred in the early evening hours, disrupting the community and drawing a significant police response to the scene.
According to the
Louisville Metro Police Department, the incident escalated into a shootout between Patterson and 29-year-old Robert Hebert. Officers arriving at the location around 6:30 p.m. discovered the two men suffering from gunshot wounds in close proximity to one another, with one found near a courtyard and the other just a couple of buildings away. Paramedics attempted life-saving measures, and both individuals were transported to the University of Louisville Hospital. Patterson, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the torso, was pronounced dead at 7:03 p.m., just minutes after Hebert succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries.
The investigation revealed that the two men had fatally wounded each other during the exchange of gunfire. Detectives determined that there were no other individuals involved in the shooting, and consequently, no additional suspects were sought or arrested in connection with the deaths. The case was effectively closed as a mutual homicide, with authorities concluding that the lethal force used by both parties resulted in their simultaneous demise.
The violence at Beecher Terrace was part of a troubling series of events for the area that spring. The shooting occurred just three weeks after Robert Hebert's brother was killed in a separate incident nearby at 12th and Fisk Court. Patterson was survived by his parents, several siblings, and his children. He was laid to rest in Green Meadows Cemetery following services at Ratterman Grand Chapels.
