In the autumn of 1990, the community of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was shaken by the violent death of a dedicated public servant. On the evening of October 26th, 63-year-old Edward Earl Flora, a male who served as a Constable for the Warren County Fifth District, was investigating a single-vehicle accident near his home on Jack Simmons Road. The car involved in the crash had been reported stolen earlier that day.
As Constable Flora was attempting to find the driver, he was tragically shot in the back of the head.
Despite his grievous injury, Constable Flora was able to call for help and was transported to a local hospital. Sadly, he would later succumb to the fatal wound. His death marked the end of a 26-year career in law enforcement, leaving behind a wife, a daughter, and two sons who were left to grapple with the senseless act of violence that had taken their loved one.
The investigation into the shooting led to the swift apprehension of a 17-year-old male. It was determined that the teenager had stolen the vehicle involved in the accident and was the individual who had shot Constable Flora with a. 22 caliber handgun as the constable investigated the scene. The young man was subsequently convicted of murder for his actions and received a sentence of life in prison. The motive for the sudden and brutal attack remains a painful question for the family, who continue to feel the weight of their loss.
