On a tragic day in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Khamphao Phromratsamy, a 36-year-old man of Laotian descent, was killed on August 17, 1996. He, along with his ex-wife, 32-year-old Manyvanh Boonprasert, became the victims of a brutal home invasion. The couple, who still resided together with their three children, were fatally shot in an execution-style manner.
Their 12-year-old daughter was also shot in the head but miraculously survived the attack, while their two sons, aged 8 and 4, were unharmed.
The perpetrators were identified as members of the 'Asian Boyz' gang. The events of that fateful night began when Outh 'Rambo' Sananikone, the purported ringleader, gathered the group with the intention to 'do something crazy.' They forcibly entered the family's Gardenside Way home, where they robbed and beat Boonprasert. Phromratsamy, Boonprasert, and their daughter were then forced into a bathroom.
Following Sananikone's orders, Sophal 'Saggy' Phon, who was 16 at the time, acted as the triggerman, shooting both Phromratsamy and Boonprasert in the head. After the initial shootings, Sananikone instructed another gang member, Chhon 'Spikey' Pok, to go back inside and ensure the victims were dead. Pok found that the daughter was still alive but retreated and told the others that everyone was deceased. The gang then fled in the family's van, which they abandoned about a mile away.
In the aftermath, law enforcement arrested Sananikone and four other members of the gang. Outh Rambo Sananikone eventually entered an Alford plea of guilt to two counts of murder by complicity and other charges, receiving a life sentence. Sophol Phon was convicted of murder and also sentenced to life in prison, though his sentence was later subject to review due to his age at the time of the crime. Chhon Spikey Pok and another member, Reuth 'Short Dog' Chhoeung, who was also a juvenile at the time of the crime, were also convicted for their roles in the double homicide.
