On a summer evening in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a verbal argument between two men escalated into a fatal encounter that left one of them dead. Robert Glenn Cherry, a 43-year-old man, was shot and killed on July 22, 2021, on Collegeview Drive. The events leading up to the shooting began with a dispute between Cherry and another man, Michael Burgett.
According to a witness, the two were seen in a heated verbal exchange in front of Cherry's home on Audubon Drive.
Following the argument, the witness and Cherry got into a vehicle and drove around. Their drive ended when Cherry reportedly spotted Burgett walking along Collegeview Drive and exited the vehicle to confront him. As Cherry approached, Burgett, who had allegedly dropped a firearm, picked it up and fired two shots. The Bowling Green Police Department responded to reports of the shooting and found Cherry's body lying in the street.
Later that same night, law enforcement located and arrested 46-year-old Michael Burgett in connection with the shooting. He was found shirtless about 30 minutes after police were dispatched to the scene. Burgett was subsequently charged with murder, first-degree wanton endangerment, and tampering with physical evidence. The case against him has been proceeding through the court system, with a jury trial scheduled. The legal proceedings have included competency hearings to determine if Burgett was fit to stand trial, with conflicting psychological evaluations presented.
