In the spring of 2008 in Louisville, Kentucky, the lives of 14-year-old Gregory Louis Coontz and his 10-year-old sister, Randy Nicole 'Nikki' Coontz, were tragically cut short. On Thursday, March 27, 2008, the siblings were found deceased in their home, both having suffered from gunshot wounds. It is believed they were shot while they were sleeping. Gregory was a student at Noe Middle School where he was part of the Gifted and Talented Program and the chorus.
He was also an explorer with the Highview Fire Department.
The discovery of the children's bodies came after their mother, Gail Lynn Coontz, 37, went to the University of Louisville, where she was a student, and held a counselor at gunpoint. During this incident, she made an alarming statement that her children had been 'sent to be with their dad,' who was known to be deceased. After she was disarmed and taken into custody, police were dispatched to her residence to check on the welfare of her children, leading to the grim discovery.
Gail Lynn Coontz was arrested and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of her son and daughter. She was also charged with terroristic threatening for the incident at the university. Following her arrest, she was initially taken to a hospital psychiatric ward before being transferred to the Louisville jail. While a definitive motive was not immediately released by law enforcement, court documents indicated that Gail Coontz, a widowed mother, had been experiencing significant financial difficulties, having filed for bankruptcy twice in the years leading up to the incident.
