In the afternoon hours of a Friday in Louisville, Kentucky, tragedy struck the Chickasaw neighborhood. On June 18, 2021, Hakim Rushin, an 18-year-old Black male, was found with a single gunshot wound. The discovery was made near the intersection of South 40th Street and Grand Avenue, a scene that would soon be filled with the flashing lights of emergency vehicles.
Rushin was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injury.
Hakim, born on September 25, 2002, was a young man with a life that was just beginning to unfold. Raised in Louisville, he was known for his love of baseball and football, and he also had a passion for rapping. He was an employee at UPS and, more importantly, a loving father to his son, Kylyn. Those who knew him described him as a respectful individual who cherished people, especially his family. He took great pride in being a big brother to his sister and was engaged to be married. His passing left a void in the lives of his son, mother, siblings, grandparents, and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
In the wake of the shooting, the Louisville Metro Police Department opened a homicide investigation. However, details about the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting were not immediately released to the public. Authorities appealed to the community for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact their anonymous tip line. To date, there has been no public announcement regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the death of Hakim Rushin, leaving his family and community still searching for answers.
