In the late hours of a February night in Louisville, Kentucky, a domestic argument between 29-year-old Ollie Davis and his girlfriend, Candra McWhorter, turned deadly. The Black male's life was cut short on February 26, 2014, in their Park Hill neighborhood home on Wilson Avenue. The verbal altercation escalated, leading McWhorter to retrieve a handgun from her teenage daughter's room.
McWhorter later told police that Davis had threatened to kill her, causing her to fear for her life,
although she admitted he had never been physically violent towards her before. When Davis confronted her in the daughter's bedroom, she fired a single shot that struck him in the chest. Emergency services were called, and Davis was rushed to University Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight.
Initially, 33-year-old Candra McWhorter was charged with first-degree assault domestic violence. However, following Davis's death, the charges against her were upgraded to murder. In court, her attorney argued that she was the true victim, having acted in self-defense. McWhorter's bond was set at $25,000.
The legal proceedings concluded in December 2014 when Candra McWhorter accepted a plea deal. She pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of reckless homicide. The agreement resulted in a five-year probated sentence, bringing a close to the case that ended a young man's life and forever altered the course of another's.
