A single blast to the abdomen would prove fatal.
Inside the home at the time of the shooting were Peals' two youngest daughters, aged just three and four.
They were witnesses to the immediate chaos and tragedy that unfolded. Despite being grievously wounded, Peals was able to communicate a vital piece of information to his fiancée as she called for help. He identified his attacker as someone he had seen at his brother's funeral, suggesting a personal connection and a potential motive for the senseless act. He was rushed to University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
