A 2010 graduate of Berea Community High School and a member of the Kentucky Army National Guard, his passing sent ripples of shock and grief through his community.
The events of that evening unfolded within the confines of an apartment belonging to 21-year-old Zachary A. Redmerski. It was here that 19-year-old Richard D. Sirry of Berea was handling a rifle. According to police reports, the rifle was loaded, but the safety was engaged. In a fateful moment, Dittman reportedly grabbed the barrel of the weapon while Sirry was holding it and pulled it towards his own forehead. The firearm discharged, striking Dittman in the head.
