In the summer of 2021, a tragedy befell the city of Richmond, Kentucky, with the death of 54-year-old Christopher Lynn 'Chris' Hager. On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 3rd, Christopher and his wife, Gracie, were shot and killed outside a duplex they owned on Keystone Drive. The couple, who were well-regarded in their community as entrepreneurs and devout church members, had recently purchased the property.
Witnesses recounted a horrific scene, stating they heard gunshots and saw a man
firing into the couple's truck. Gracie Hager was discovered deceased inside the vehicle. According to witness statements, after shooting Gracie, the gunman approached Christopher, who was already on the ground and screaming from a gunshot wound, and shot him in the head.
The alleged shooter was identified as 51-year-old Thomas Birl, a man who was staying at the duplex. Following the shooting, Birl barricaded himself inside the apartment. A standoff with police ensued for several hours. During this time, Birl set the apartment on fire, causing extensive damage to the building. Eventually, authorities used 'rounds of powdered gas' to flush Birl out of the burning duplex, and he was taken into custody.
Investigators found 9mm shell casings at the scene and a 9mm handgun in the room from which Birl had fled. The firearm was later confirmed to have been stolen from West Virginia. Birl was subsequently charged with two counts of murder, arson, and evidence tampering. While the preliminary investigation did not indicate that the Hagers were there to serve an eviction notice, the motive for the killings remained unclear. The case against Birl has seen legal complexities, including an initial ruling that he was incompetent to stand trial, though he was later reindicted. The family continues to await justice as the legal proceedings continue.
