In the cool autumn night of November 4, 2018, a life was tragically cut short in the parking lot of a Richmond, Kentucky gas station. Matthew S. Francis, a 26-year-old Caucasian male from Somerset, became the victim of a fatal shooting that stemmed from a heated altercation. The incident unfolded at the Cannon Corner Marathon on Berea Road, shattering the evening's calm and leaving a community in shock.
According to Kentucky State Police, an argument between Francis and another man,
22-year-old Brandon C. Short of Waco, escalated with devastating consequences. It is alleged that during the dispute, Short retrieved a firearm and shot Francis. The single gunshot proved fatal, and Matthew S. Francis was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison County Coroner's Office. The call reporting shots fired came in around 10:15 p.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
In the wake of the shooting, the Kentucky State Police launched an investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. Brandon C. Short was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was subsequently lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
