In the warm early morning hours of August 5, 2017, in Lexington, Kentucky, a life was cut tragically short. Sean Thomas Howard, a 19-year-old male, was fatally wounded by a gunshot while seated in a car. The incident occurred in the parking lot of Mist Lake Plaza, located at the intersection of Richmond Road and South Locust Hill Drive. Following the shooting, Howard was transported in a private vehicle to Saint Joseph East Hospital.
Despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 12:56 a.m.
Authorities were alerted to the shooting after Howard's arrival at the hospital. The investigation that followed suggested the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather stemmed from a prior dispute between the victim and the person who shot him. At the time of the shooting, Howard was in the car with three other individuals. It was later stated in court proceedings that the individuals in the vehicle were involved in a marijuana transaction.
An arrest was made in connection with the shooting, with police taking a 17-year-old male into custody. Due to his age, his identity was not initially released to the public. The suspect was later identified as Antonio Canada. Prosecutors alleged that Canada was attempting to shoot another person in the car, Austin McPherson, over a dispute involving a broken cell phone that Canada had purchased from McPherson for $50. The prosecution's narrative was that Canada approached the vehicle, demanded his 'stuff' from McPherson, and in the process of firing at McPherson, struck and killed Sean Howard instead. A witness who was in the car at the time of the shooting identified Canada as the perpetrator.
However, the legal proceedings that unfolded over the subsequent years painted a more complex picture. In October 2021, after a trial, a Fayette County jury acquitted Antonio Canada, then 21, of all charges related to the death of Sean Howard, including murder and robbery. The jury was presented with the option to convict on lesser charges of manslaughter or reckless homicide but ultimately found Canada not guilty. His defense attorney argued that efforts to connect the shooting to a drug deal were a distraction and questioned the lack of certain evidence from the prosecution, such as gunshot residue tests on Canada's clothing and DNA evidence from the car. After spending four years incarcerated, Antonio Canada was released as a free man. The death of Sean Howard, a graduate of Tates Creek High School who was planning to start college, remains a tragic event that concluded with a verdict of not guilty for the only individual publicly charged.
