In the summer of 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon quiet at a Lexington, Kentucky apartment complex, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Twenty-two-year-old Quatrell Kimble was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on July 2nd in a stairwell at the Coolavin Apartments on West Sixth Street. A mounted police officer nearby heard the shots around 12:45 p.m. and was the first to arrive at the scene.
Emergency responders performed CPR before rushing Kimble to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the shooting moved quickly as police reviewed surveillance footage from the area. The video showed a man in distinctive clothing running from the breezeway where Kimble had been shot. This man was seen jumping a fence and pacing in a nearby yard while talking on a cell phone, appearing to have something heavy in his pocket. A short time later, about 15 minutes after the shooting, footage from another camera captured the same man getting into the passenger seat of a blue Chevy Cobalt. Investigators located the owner of the car, who confirmed she had lent it to a woman she knew as 'T' and her boyfriend, 'Paso.' When shown photographs, she identified them as Tyreshe Monique Webb and David Williams. Hours after the fatal shooting, police stopped the blue Cobalt and found Williams inside.
David Williams, who was 32 at the time, was arrested and charged with the murder of Quatrell Kimble. His girlfriend, 24-year-old Tyreshe Monique Webb, was also arrested and charged with hindering his apprehension by providing him with transportation to flee the scene. During his trial, Williams did not deny that he had killed Kimble, but he claimed it was an act of self-defense, asserting that Kimble had a gun and had threatened him.
In November 2021, a jury rejected David Williams' self-defense claim and found him guilty of murder. While Kimble did have a loaded gun on him, prosecutors successfully argued that Williams could not have known about the weapon at the time of the shooting. They contended the shooting may have been the result of a 'business dispute,' as both men were found to be in possession of drugs. Williams, who was 34 at the time of his conviction, was also found guilty of other crimes. His girlfriend, Tyreshe Monique Webb, was convicted of hindering apprehension and other lesser charges for her role in helping him after the murder.
