On a cold January afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, a senseless argument over a simple breakfast dish tragically escalated, ending the life of 26-year-old Jasmine Newsome. On January 6, 2018, in the Park Hill neighborhood, what began as a verbal dispute over scrambled eggs culminated in Newsome being fatally shot in the doorway of her home on West Ormsby Avenue.
The incident marked the city's first homicide of the year.
The altercation started earlier that day when Newsome was at her neighbor's home and cooked scrambled eggs. The neighbor's boyfriend, 21-year-old Michael Hamblen, became engaged in a verbal dispute with Newsome about the eggs. Following the initial argument, Hamblen allegedly went to Newsome's residence with the frying pan, dumped the eggs on her floor, and demanded she clean them up before leaving.
Shortly after, Hamblen returned to Newsome's home, this time armed with a handgun. He entered her home without permission and fired multiple shots, striking her ten times in the pelvic area. Newsome was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Louisville Metro Police arrested Michael Hamblen in connection with the shooting. He was charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, as he had previous assault convictions that legally prohibited him from owning a firearm. The weapon used in the shooting was not immediately recovered by the authorities. Hamblen's bond was set at $500,000, and he was later convicted of the charges by a Jefferson County jury.
