In the early hours of March 15, 2014, the life of 26-year-old Ashley Thomas was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. The incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Esquire Alley, where a shooting broke out. Thomas was fatally wounded during the altercation. Another woman at the scene was also shot, sustaining a non-life-threatening injury to her hand for which she received treatment at University Hospital.

Police to identify two suspects. Shortly after the incident, authorities apprehended 21-year-old Roy D. Stone. He was subsequently charged with murder, assault, and wanton endangerment. The search for a second individual connected to the crime continued for several weeks.
On April 4, 2014, the second suspect, 30-year-old Cedric Wells, was arrested. According to police reports, eyewitnesses identified Wells as being in possession of a handgun and firing it multiple times, leading to Thomas's death. Wells faced charges of murder, complicity to murder, assault, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that had ended a young woman's life and shaken the community.
