In the summer of 2018, the life of 21-year-old Gregory Norris Jr. was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Louisville, Kentucky. On the afternoon of July 9th, inside a common area of an apartment complex in the 5300 block of Hames Trace in the Fern Creek neighborhood, Norris was shot multiple times. A resident of the complex, he was found by neighbors who heard the gunshots, initially mistaking them for firecrackers.
Despite their calls for help, Norris was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after police arrived. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that his death was a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed that it was connected to a narcotics transaction that had taken a fatal turn. Within a week, police arrested 19-year-old Yacir Raful Jr. in connection with the killing. According to police reports, Raful admitted to being present to conduct a drug deal with Norris. He stated that an altercation occurred during the transaction, which led to another individual who was with him shooting Norris. Raful and the alleged shooter then fled the scene with the drugs and the weapon.
Further investigation led to the identification of the second suspect as 17-year-old Chad Austin Harlamert. Both Raful and Harlamert were charged with complicity to murder, first-degree robbery, and tampering with physical evidence, with Harlamert being charged as an adult. In March 2020, Yacir Raful Jr. entered a guilty plea to amended charges of complicity to first-degree robbery, second-degree manslaughter, and tampering with physical evidence. A judge subsequently sentenced him to 12 years in prison. Norris's mother expressed her profound disappointment with the plea deal, feeling that it did not represent true justice for her son's murder. The case against Chad Austin Harlamert was still proceeding through the court system.
