In a quiet home in the Shively area of Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 21-year-old Dwayne Davis was brought to a sudden and violent end on the evening of November 15, 2018. A Black male, Mr. Davis was inside a bedroom with a female companion when the scene turned deadly. The tranquil evening was shattered by the intrusion of a man from the woman's past, an encounter that would culminate in tragedy.

The alleged assailant, identified as 23-year-old Raheem Hardin, entered the bedroom armed with a gun equipped with a laser sight. The woman present was the mother of Hardin's child, and their relationship had recently ended. Despite her attempts to de-escalate the situation and persuade Hardin to put down his weapon, he proceeded to open fire, shooting Davis twice. As Davis fell to the ground, Hardin fired at him again. Several children were in the home at the time of the shooting, witnesses to a scene of unimaginable horror.

Following the shooting, Hardin fled the residence by climbing out of a window. His escape was short-lived, however, as Shively Police officers, who had been dispatched to the scene on Mathies Lane shortly after 5 p.m., spotted him running from the area. A foot chase ensued, leading to a fenced-in area near Ralph Avenue. With the assistance of a Louisville Metro Police Department K-9 unit, authorities were able to locate Hardin hiding inside a vehicle.

After being apprehended and following interviews with witnesses, Raheem Hardin was arrested and faced multiple charges, including murder, fleeing or evading police, tampering with physical evidence, and criminal trespassing. He was subsequently booked into Louisville Metro Corrections. The brother of Dwayne Davis later stated that he believed the motive for the shooting was a dispute over a girl.
