In the spring of 2016, a young man's life was cut short in Louisville, Kentucky, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss. Nineteen-year-old Dustin J. Osborne, a male resident of Louisville, died on April 14, 2016, from a gunshot wound to the chest. The fatal incident occurred at the home of his friend, 18-year-old Rion Graves, near Churchill Downs.
According to police reports, Graves was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with murder.
Graves admitted to shooting Osborne but maintained that it was a tragic accident. His attorney stated that the two were best friends, 'almost like a brother to him,' and that the gun discharged accidentally as Osborne was handing it back to Graves. Graves had recently purchased the firearm for self-defense after being the victim of a stabbing. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Graves called 911 and attempted to perform CPR on his friend.
Despite the claims of an accidental shooting, the legal process moved forward. A not guilty plea was entered on Graves' behalf, and he was placed on house arrest after posting a portion of his $200,000 bond. The commonwealth's attorney was expected to offer a plea deal in the case. The death of Dustin J. Osborne deeply affected his family, including his father, Charles Osborne, and his sister, Destiny Osborne.
