In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 31, 2019, the life of William McAllister, a 26-year-old Black man, was cut short in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Police were called to a residence on the 800 block of East Second Street, where they discovered McAllister in the front yard. He had been fatally shot. An autopsy was scheduled to determine his exact cause of death, and the Hopkinsville Police Department launched a homicide investigation.
The scene on East Second Street was part of a
complex morning for local law enforcement. Just before 4 a.m., around the same time McAllister was found, a 39-year-old man named Damion Lane had been dropped off at Jennie Stuart Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his lower back. Lane was treated and released, but police noted that he was not cooperative with their investigation. He was later charged with public intoxication after he appeared at the crime scene on East Second Street. Detectives began working to determine if the two shootings were in any way connected.
As the investigation into McAllister's death progressed, authorities learned that a number of individuals were present at the East Second Street home around the time the fatal shots were fired. Investigators obtained surveillance footage from the area, which they believed could be crucial to solving the case. On April 2, 2019, police released a portion of this video to the public in the hope that someone might recognize the people shown or have information about what happened.
The footage captured several people in close proximity to the incident at about 3:30 a.m. Police urged anyone who could help them piece together the events of that morning to come forward. As of April 2019, no arrests had been made, and the murder of William McAllister remains unsolved.
