On a Saturday morning, April 10, 2021, a violent altercation outside a Valero gas station on East Ninth Street in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, claimed the life of 31-year-old Delmour Moncrief. The incident, which unfolded a little before 9 a.m. at the establishment formerly known as Scott's Market, stemmed from a dispute between Moncrief and two other men in the parking lot. During the confrontation, one of the men shot Moncrief in the stomach.
He was rushed to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Moncrief's last known city of residence was Malden, Missouri.
The Hopkinsville Police Department quickly launched an investigation and identified two suspects who had fled the scene in a red Toyota Solara. One of the men was identified as 26-year-old David Rashawn King. The investigation led to the identification of the second suspect as 21-year-old Dalton Hall. Within days, Hall was apprehended in Alabama and faced charges of murder, tampering with evidence, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. King remained at large for a few months until his arrest in Todd County in early July of the same year. King was served with a Christian County Grand Jury indictment warrant for murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, and hindering the prosecution or apprehension of a fugitive.
The legal process for both men unfolded over the following year. David King eventually pleaded guilty in October to possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and hindering the apprehension of a fugitive as part of a plea deal, which resulted in a five-year prison sentence. In April 2022, Dalton Hall, the man accused of firing the fatal shot, also accepted a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to murder, and in exchange, charges of tampering with evidence and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon were dismissed. The plea deal came with a recommended sentence of 20 years in prison. Hall's formal sentencing was delayed to allow for the completion of a pre-sentencing investigation report and to allow Moncrief's family, who had traveled from out of state, to be present.
