In the Hazelwood neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, a dispute that began over the phone escalated into a fatal encounter on the evening of April 6, 2019, ending the life of 20-year-old Tashawn Feld. That night, Elvis Carrier, then 29 years old, stood on his porch on Parthenia Avenue armed with an AR-15 rifle. Believing that Feld was armed and posed a threat based on their earlier telephone conversation, Carrier fired multiple shots.
One of the bullets struck Feld in the torso, inflicting a fatal wound.
The gunfire not only claimed Feld's life but also endangered several other people in the vicinity. Some of the rounds fired by Carrier hit a car with a woman inside, and others penetrated a neighboring home. Inside that home, another woman was struck twice in her side while her two-year-old child slept beside her. Witnesses to the shooting, however, contradicted Carrier's perception of a threat, stating that Feld was unarmed at the time of the incident.
Following the shooting, Elvis Carrier was arrested and taken into custody at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter for the death of Tashawn Feld, in addition to second-degree assault and two counts of wanton endangerment for the injuries and danger posed to the other individuals. Though he initially claimed he acted in self-defense, Carrier later pleaded guilty to the charges. In July 2022, he was sentenced for his role in the tragic events of that spring evening.
